Hungry to Learn, a film by Soledad O’Brien and Geeta Gandbhir, centers the forty-five percent of #RealCollege students facing food insecurity through the power of storytelling. The documentary follows four students as they face the financial demands of an education opportunity while trying to keep food on the table at the same time. Their stories shine a light on the long-ignored experience of food insecurity: distracted through class by a growling stomach, explaining to a professor that a low exam score was from having nothing to eat over the past 48 hours, eating at food pantries, and even applying for food stamps only to learn it’s nearly impossible to qualify as a full-time student. Experts and advocates, including The Hope Center’s founder Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab, weigh in on this systemic crisis, and put forward solutions that remind us of the simple fact that #RealCollege students are first and foremost human beings.
